From 1967 to 1973, Japanese electronic music entered one of its most radical periods. This album brings together five works by Makoto Moroi, Minao Shibata, Toshiro Mayuzumi, Joji Yuasa, and Makoto Shinohara. Voices, traditional instruments, radio broadcasts, and electronic sounds are transformed through analog tape and painstaking manual editing—a vivid document of Japan’s pre-digital electronic music revolution.
1. Shosange— Makoto Moroi, 1967
Conch shells, shakuhachi, and shamisen are radically transformed through logarithmic amplitude and ring modulation, producing fierce tremolos, vibratos, and fugue-like layers of sound. Recorded on a rare six-track vacuum-tube machine, the work retains a remarkably soft, warm tone beneath its dense electronic textures. It was also the final piece produced at NHK’s Uchikoumachi Broadcasting Hall.
2. Display ’70 — Minao Shibata, 1969
Created for the Japan Government Pavilion at Expo ’70, this work confronts percussion with electronic sound, setting physical impact against synthetic colour. Hundreds of individually prepared sounds were assembled by hand through painstaking tape editing and manual level control. The result is a vivid monument to electronic music before computers—when every second of complexity demanded extraordinary labour.
3. Mandara, with Sources of Voice and Electronic Sound — Toshiro Mayuzumi, 1969
Mayuzumi transforms immense clusters of sine waves, white noise, and human laughter through logarithmic amplitude and ring modulation. The first half unfolds as an unrepeatable electronic mandala of accidental textures; the second reshapes voices ranging from everyday laughter to traditional jōruri. Meticulous technology and raw human expression merge into a strange, intoxicating sound world.
4. Voices Coming — Joji Yuasa, 1969
The first of Yuasa’s trilogy on voice and language, *Voices Coming* asks where music, speech, and human identity begin. Inspired by Herbert Read and D. T. Suzuki, Yuasa moves beyond the opposition of Japan and the West to explore a deeper boundary: the moment when “I” separates from everything outside the self. Electronic sound becomes a journey toward the origins of communication.
5. Broadcasting — Makoto Shinohara, 1973
Shinohara transformed some twenty hours of NHK radio into a 19-minute sonic portrait of Japanese reality. Six tape recorders and more than 100 reels captured a full day of broadcasting, but synchronising the machines proved almost impossible. After ten exhausting days of manual editing, news, speech, music, and noise were compressed into a breathless audio panorama—an achievement unimaginable in today’s digital environment.
